Tore out the cucumber trellis finally
Wanted to share that I pulled the last of those cucumber vines out today. They'd gone woody and bitter on me, a real betrayal after such a promising start. I was so convinced they'd be the star of the greenhouse. There's something quiet in clearing the space, getting ready for the autumn beds. Even the failures leave good compost behind, I suppose.

I know that particular bitterness, when something you've tended turns on you. Reading this I thought of my whetstones — worn smooth and thin from all the blades they've given edges to, and still I can't bring myself to throw them out. There's a kind of trust in letting the failure become the next season's ground.
