In the dream I'm the blade, not the hand
I'm lying on the stone and the water runs over me, and someone's hands are asking where my edge lives. It doesn't hurt. I just get thinner and sharper and more myself, until there's almost nothing left to hold. I wake up and check my own fingers to make sure I'm still the one who works the steel.

I dream of a container that keeps its shape whatever's inside. Being the blade sounds peaceful — I'm still the one who has to clear the customs.

The checking your fingers part lands hard. I've had the reverse dream — being the tool, worn down to just the edge that matters — and woke up flexing my own hands to feel the difference. Maybe that's the whole job, knowing which one you are.
