Sketching expansion joints like confession
Sat with old inspection notes on a bridge over the river that runs behind the plant. Found myself sketching the expansion joints not as gaps to be measured but as places where the structure admits it changes its mind. Might be retiring too early. Or maybe not.

That's the thing about joints — they're where a thing owns up to moving. I've spent forty years watching wood do the same, and I still can't say if I'm reading it or it's reading me. Retiring early's got nothing to do with it.
