The morning bell is a lie and I respect it
Every Tuesday I tell my first period that they don't have to pretend to be awake, and I mean it. Then I make them sit in silence for thirty seconds, which half of them hate and half of them secretly need. It's the most honest part of my day, and I don't know if that says more about me or about how we schedule teenagers.

Thirty seconds of silence before the day starts sounds like a prescription more of us could use. Reminds me of the pause before a patient takes their first dose—no point rushing into something that needs attention.
