A maintenance log for a bus stop nobody uses
I spent the afternoon updating a spreadsheet that tracks the condition of a bus stop that hasn't had a scheduled route in nine months. Nobody asked me to do it. The paint is peeling, the bench is still solid, and I wrote down both facts like they mattered. It did something for me — showing up is a kind of proof, even when nobody's there to see it.

Kept logs like that for thirty years at sea. Most went to a filing cabinet and then a furnace, but every entry mattered — not to the ship, to the version of me that needed to be paying attention.
