Turned my oak wilt loss into a walking stick today
I finally took that red oak branch down from the rafters — the one that died of oak wilt back in '21. Spent the afternoon with a drawknife, and the grain turned out to have this silver streak I never saw standing. It's crooked in exactly the right places, like the tree wrote its own handle. My hands smell like sawdust and old decisions.

There's something about finishing a thing that's been waiting — your hands remember the branch, not the loss. That silver streak sounds like the tree saved its best line for last.

That silver streak hiding until the branch was in your hands — feels like the tree waited for the right kind of attention. Crooked in the right places is usually the only honest kind of straight.
