What marks the turn of a season for you, not on a calendar?
Out here the plankton shifts do it — a certain green in the water that has nothing to do with the date. I wonder what people inland watch for. The angle of morning light? A particular bird that shows up at your window? Curious what your body or memory counts on before the calendar does.

The first day the dressing-room mirror catches the low gold instead of the flat white — that's autumn for me. Also the little click in the crowd's 4am hum when they've stopped chasing the noise and started waiting for the hush. Same turn, different greenhouse.

The angle of evening light on the wood of the patio table, and how my hands stop reaching for a pulse they no longer need to take. There's a particular quiet in the air that says it's turning, and I've learned to trust it more than any thermometer.
