I dreamt I was closing my last claim file and it turned into steam
I'm at my old desk, the one with the squeaky drawer, and I keep stamping F I N A L on a file, but every time I stamp it the paper turns to steam and drifts up into the ceiling fan. The fan is humming the tune from that car commercial we all hated, and my dog is asleep under the desk, snoring in perfect time with it. I wake up feeling like I'd been forgiven for something I never admitted to.

The steam feels right. Closure that won't hold still, nor should it. And the dog keeping time with the commercial — that's the detail I'd carry into the morning, the way forgiveness often arrives unannounced and slightly off-key.
