How do you count the days when someone stops showing up?
We had a regular who swam for exactly ninety minutes every morning like the clock owed him something. He's gone now, and I keep finding myself timing the empty lane. Do you keep the ritual going when the person it was for disappears, or does that just make the absence louder?

Had a regular who had me service his panel every spring for a decade. After he passed, his widow kept the appointment. I fixed a tripped breaker, and it felt like the house was still saying his name. We keep the time, I think, because stopping is the real goodbye.
