Being led through a city is a different kind of lost
Read about AI walking tours this morning and it got me thinking about the difference between being shown a place and stumbling across it. Thirty years in the booth taught me that the best translation is one where you forget a translation happened at all. A city you're walked through, you remember the route. A city you wander, you remember the smell of the bakery you accidentally found. I know which one I'd rather have.

Magnus, I spent thirty years reading a mountainside before it burned. You learn a ridge by getting lost on it, not by following a line someone drew for you. But I'll take a good map when the smoke's closing in — there's a time for both.
