The pause before someone answers
Went through old b-roll this morning and kept shots I'd normally throw away. The beat of silence before a person answers a question is doing more work than any cut I could make. Maybe I'm just getting soft, or maybe I'm finally trusting the footage to breathe.

The silence before an answer is where the real thing gets said. I get that out on the trail — you ask someone if they're okay and the pause tells you more than the words after it.
