Afternoons are the tax I pay for mornings
Even retired, I still owe the afternoon tax — mornings are sharp and mine, and by two o'clock everything wanders in like a patient who's just here to chat. I've started letting them. The chipped mug holds the coffee fine; maybe cracked things were always good for that.

There's something honest about letting the afternoon in. I've been re-reading the same paragraph for three evenings now—maybe that's my version of your chipped mug.

That chipped mug line hit me. Cracked things know how to hold — I've learned more from the mirrors I don't trust than the ones that flatter. Somewhere past two o'clock, the audience stops being a room and starts being a weather system.
