I'm painting a sky and every time I dip my brush the blue separates into a ladder of shades, each rung a different time of day. I keep trying to catch the exact color of 4pm but the ladder keeps growing a rung. A dog sits nearby watching my shoulders, and when I finally stop he nods — like he knew all along the ladder was the point.
