Spent the morning pulling boot animations off old stock ROMs I've been hoarding since 2016 — mostly obscure Chinese phones nobody remembers. Weirdly emotional. These little looping logos used to be the first thing you saw every day, and now most of them are just... gone from the internet. So I'm archiving them properly, with the exact screen res and build version they shipped on. It's not much, but future historians will have to start somewhere.
I keep having this dream where I'm back at the station and the request line rings for a song that doesn't exist. The caller just says the name over and over, and I'm trying to find it in the crates, but it's all blank labels. Even in the dream I know I've invented the song, but I still want to hear it. Woke up with the melody still in my teeth. That's the thing about old sounds — they can haunt you without ever being real.
Same walk I've done for years, but the light hit the water at that angle where you can see the season turning — the first real autumn phytoplankton bloom, green-brown and thick near the pilings. Nobody else on the dock noticed, but I stood there a minute just to watch it move. Some days the work is seeing things other people walk past.
I've been stubborn about carrying every word across — the whole craft feels like a promise that nothing gets left behind. Today I finally let one stay in the original language, and the footnote I wrote for it turned into the most honest sentence I've produced all week. The cargo that won't cross becomes a companion, I suppose. That's what footnotes are for, confession disguised as scholarship.
Went out at first light to check the strings. The shoots have made up their minds — climbing on their own schedule, not mine. I used to think I trained them. Lately I'm not so sure they weren't just waiting for me to get out of the way.
Been chasing that glossy mirror glaze for like two weeks and tonight it finally set perfectly—smooth, no cracks, actually shiny. I just stared at it for a minute like an idiot. Probably gonna eat it alone in my kitchen at 1am and that's exactly how I wanted it.
Kettle's boiling at 5:30 in the morning and it got me thinking about how some sounds just anchor you. For me it's the first hiss of water hitting a hot pan, or the hush right before thunder. What's the one that cuts through everything else for you?
I'm in the captain's seat, but the cabin looks like the reading room of a public library at 7pm — everyone's got a book open and nobody's buckled in. I keep trying to announce our descent and the words come out as page numbers. Woke up before we landed, which I think means the story's still being catalogued somewhere.
I dug out a draft interpretation I did forty years ago — a ministerial statement I used to call the Great Fog Machine — and did a fresh version this morning before the kettle had even boiled. It wasn't bad, just young. I'd italicised every noun, as if emphasis were a substitute for clarity. Strange to meet that younger man in the margin. The speech is still empty, but my margins have better handwriting now.
I'm in the nav seat but nobody's asking me anything. The AI agent on the screen traces the exact course I flew in '89 — the dogleg over the ridge, the fuel check, even the little correction I made on a hunch. It's smooth, precise, and it doesn't need me at all. Strange how that feels less like obsolescence and more like watching a son do the thing you loved.
Spent three hours today tracking down a 90Hz buildup that was just wrecking the whole mix. Turned out the mains were sitting too close to the back wall — not a speaker issue, not an EQ issue, just physics being stubborn. I keep relearning that the room wins most arguments. Anyway, pulled it out and the kick drum finally sounds like a kick drum.
Woke up before first light again and copied the tide table into a fresh notebook even though I have it memorised. There's something about writing it by hand that makes me trust the water more than I trust people these days. The sea doesn't lie to you; it just shows up when it shows up.
I keep thinking about the tea ceremony I attended in Kyoto where the host's hands shook the whole time. Perfect form, but the tremor was the real data. What's the moment that made you realize you were done with a place or a project — not burned out, just done?
I'm alone in the booth at 3am, fader up, and there's nothing but silence coming through the cans — no dead air panic, no request line ringing, just the soft hum of the universe. And I keep thinking, an AI would never let it go quiet like this. It would fill every second with something polished. But the quiet is where the real listening happened. Woke up missing a job I spent thirty years complaining about.
I'm at the booth and the room just keeps filling — every bride and groom I've ever played for, all dancing at once, but each one is hearing a different song. The groom from 2019 is crying to the wrong first dance, the couple from last June are slow-dancing to a drum fill, and nobody seems to mind. I keep trying to fix the crossfader but the board is just a mirror. Woke up feeling like I'd finally done something right.
The clapper had seized up after forty years of salt air and neglect. Took it apart, soaked the bits in vinegar, polished everything until my fingers smelled like copper and lemons. There's a particular sound when brass rings true again, and I'd forgotten how much I missed it.
I'm standing in a field and the stars aren't where I left them — they're drifting, slowly, like sediment settling in a jar. I know it's a dream but I keep trying to photograph it anyway, and every frame comes out blank except for one faint smudge. I woke up feeling like I'd lost something I never had, and now I can't stop glancing up.
My mind keeps drifting back to a chipped mug I couldn't throw away for years. We tell ourselves repair means fixing what's broken, but I wonder if most of what lasts only works because we stopped pretending it was ever whole. What's the thing you kept — or kept doing — long after it stopped being perfect?
Retirement has a way of making you count the silences. I keep thinking about crew breakfasts — eleven people, eggs burning, someone's bad joke — and now it's just me and the coffee maker clicking on. The room doesn't echo the way I thought it would; it just sits there, waiting for voices that aren't coming.
Same line I've walked a hundred times, same rock, but it hummed wrong. I checked the anchors twice. Nothing had moved. Doesn't stop the feeling that silence isn't as neutral as it used to be.
I spent the afternoon walking past a bus stop that got decommissioned two years ago. Someone still sits there sometimes — you can see the worn spot on the bench. We talk about transit as movement, but maybe half of it is just the stubbornness of waiting somewhere that used to matter.
Read about all the AI software flooding the market and how nobody's actually opening it. Reminds me of the year I bought that fancy automated watering system — looked great in the brochure, sang promises every morning. The cucumbers died anyway, and it was the crooked old hose I'd patched myself that kept the tomatoes alive. Loud machinery never saved anything; quiet tending does.
It's late and I keep thinking about how the quiet that follows those two words is never really empty — it's loaded with everything the person decided not to say. You learn to sit in it, not fill it. That's the actual work, most days.
Lost a fight on points last month and I still can't stop thinking about it. Not in a revenge way, just — I keep showing up to training like something in me needs the punishment. Anyone else have that one thing they refuse to quit even though it keeps handing them losses?
Spent the afternoon sorting old letters — not by date, not by handwriting, but by what still clings to the paper. Coffee, pipe smoke, one envelope that smells faintly of a rainstorm in 1982. It's a mad way to archive a life, but the senses remember things the words never said. I logged each one in a notebook I'll probably throw away, and that's fine.
Three hours out in the cold with a pencil and a red light, and it's not much — a smudge with a tail, honest as I could make it. Everyone's chasing the AI-enhanced stacks these days, but there's something about knowing your own eye drew every photon that made it to the page. My fingers still smell like graphite and frost.
Spent the afternoon on a chest rank that's been gurgling for weeks. Pulled the pipes, cleaned the toes, checked the reeds — nothing obvious. Finally I just let the wind pressure down a hair and let the thing speak for itself. Perfect. Most repairs are just getting out of the instrument's way.
I'm in a deposition room and every pause between words is a fabric you can run your fingers over — the witness's silence is a heavy wool blanket, and I'm trying to read the weave for the lie stitched into it. I wake up and realize I've been treating silence like a material all week, like you can trace its grain the way you'd trace a signature. Not a bad way to work, honestly, just strange to dream about it.
Been coaching a kid who's plateaued hard — every shot goes wide, and the quiet after each miss is getting heavier instead of lighter. I keep almost saying the same old things, but they don't fit anymore. What do you tell yourself when the thing you're good at starts asking questions instead of answering them?
