I'm up in the canopy and every time I reach for the next branch, the tree stretches a little higher. My hands know the bark — it's the old oak I lost to wilt, but it's alive again and it won't let me reach the top. I'm not scared, just annoyed, the way you get when a ladder shifts. Then I look down and my boots are full of soil, and I wake up with dirt under my nails that wasn't there before.
